Pathway Enterprises, Inc. began as Southern Oregon Training Habilitation which incorporated in May of 1985 to provide homes and work opportunities for residents of Fairview Training Center, Oregon’s State Institution for the developmentally disabled returned people to our community and their families. In 1986 we opened four homes in the Rogue Valley area; Phoenix Rising in Phoenix and Genesis House in Talent, as well as two homes in Ashland; Evergreen House and Larkspur House.
At this time we also developed our first vocational programs. A food service supported-work enclave was established at a local bakery and Hollyhock Nursery, a wholesale greenhouse and work training center, opened in Ashland. One year later, Hollyhock Nursery added a grounds-maintenance crew that eventually developed into the All Season Maintenance Program we have today.
In 1988, PEI started the first apartment supported-living program for developmentally disabled adults in Jackson County. This ultimately evolved into two separate residential homes in Medford; Redwood House and Serenity House.
During the spring of 1993, PEI expanded into Northern California where we took over management of the Siskiyou Adult Development Center, an adult day care and training facility, in Montague. We soon moved the center to Yerka, just 20 miles south of the Oregon border, and changed the program’s emphasis to community based employment opportunities. As a part of SADC’s commitment to vocational services, a manufacturing facility by the name of EZ-Lite Log Company was established.
This business produces logs and fire starters out of wax and recycled cardboard, with production labor provided by our clients and other workers with disabilities from Siskiyou County, California. The most recent addition to our California Division is the Siskiyou Supported Living Service Program for clients who choose to, and are able to, live in their own home. SSLS provides all necessary case management and staffing needs as well as 24-hr emergency response capability.
Pathway Enterprises, Inc. has undergone steady growth in terms of both residential and vocational opportunities for people with disabilities. From our modest beginnings, we now employ over 150 people and rank among Ashland’s largest employers. But even as we expand, our focus will continue to be on providing the highest quality service to our clients.
